Use this template as a guide only. It lists the issues that you should be thinking about when considering the design of a new or refurbished wet & damp laboratory. Not all brief items will be relevant. Please refer to the List of Relevant Standards for Laboratory Design.

Physical Containment Level Required
Australian Standard AS/NZS 2243 - parts 1 to 10 inclusive - provides details of Laboratory Safety Measures required and AS/NZS 2243.3 provides specific guidance on Microbiology Aspects and Containment Facilities. Use the current Australian Standards Schedule as a guide.
For anything other than PC1 include the specific reference to AS/NZS 2243 that applies.

Nominate any BioSecurity Controls and Registration or Quarantine controls and Registration that is required using the current Australian Standards Schedule.
Description of any Processes involving Laboratory Animals
Nominate any Processes that involve the use or storage of Laboratory Animals.

Specialised equipment required | List types, capacity and model numbers if known. State if new or re-used and the number of each type. |
Chemicals | List the chemicals to be used, quantities and storage requirements. |
Laboratory gases | List types and quantities. |
Compressed air and/or vacuum requirements | List type and capacity. |
Process cooling requirements | Describe volume and temperature range. |
RO water requirements | Schedule quality and quantity. |
Fume cabinets required | Schedule number, sizes, services required, scrubbing required, is specialised laminar flow required, finishes required and any specialised description such as double sided. |
