Student spaces

Introduction

The design of Student Spaces across the university campus is to be based on:

  • The desire to group areas that student need to access, to gain maximum efficiency and
  • To encourage a stimulating learning environment, a heightened experiential and collaboration
  • The proximity of the adjacent active and passive student areas
  • The required interactions between staff and students, prospective students or the general public.

Although each Space will be designed and developed in conjunction with the end users, all spaces are to be based on one of a small group of basic space types, to permit future flexibility of the space, and enable use of the space for different functions or future emerging needs.

Student spaces are across the campus will include a variety of types of spaces that support the educational development and will include spaces such as:

Student Life Support spaces

  • Student accommodation, short term or long term.
  • Retail spaces, including food, catering, shopping
  • Health resources spaces, including medical, clinic, hospital etc.
  • Sports & Recreational Spaces
  • Child Care spaces

Student Education Support Spaces

  • Library  and educational resources
  • Computer resources spaces
  • Museums
  • Study Spaces
  • Group Study Spaces
  • Group Work & Presentation spaces
  • Research Spaces.

Library & Resources Spaces

Quiet rooms

Existing Spaces:

  • Located as part of the Library facility
  • Quiet Rooms (9 off) on Level 1 of the Library are now bookable online in the evenings and on weekends:
  • Quiet Rooms are for use by Macquarie University & SIBT students for study purpose only.
  • Maximum 2 people per room
  • Rooms can be booked up to 7 days in advance and up to 2 hours per person, per day, during the following times;
    Monday to Friday 6pm until close
    Saturday/Sunday 10am to 6pm

Postgraduate study spaces

Existing Space:

  • Separate study spaces are available for students enrolled in Postgraduate coursework and Higher Degree Research as determined by the Office of the Registrar..
  • This space is available to students enrolled in approved Postgraduate courses.
    Your Campus Card must be activated to access these spaces
  • The Postgraduate study space is located on Level 3 of the Library.
  • Students enrolled in Postgraduate coursework studies can apply for access privileges online.
  • Your student Campus Card will be encoded to enable access to this area.
  • Due to high demand, all access updates will take 8 working days to process.
  • Features include;
    • Swipe card access
    • Over 150 seats
    • Desktop power for laptops
    • Macquarie wireless network access
    • Vending machine
    • Free daily lockers

Higher Degree Research study space

Existing Space

  • The Higher Degree Research study space is located on Level 5 of the Library.
  • This space is available to students enrolled in approved HDR courses.
  • Students enrolled in Higher Degree Research studies or Bachelor of Philosophy / Master of Research can apply for access privileges online.
  • Your student Campus Card will be encoded to enable access to this area.
    Due to high demand, all access updates will take 8 working days to process.
  • Features include:
    • Swipe card access
    • Over 130 seats
    • Desktop power for laptops
    • Macquarie wireless network access
    • Kitchenette with microwave, fridge & vending machine
    • Free daily lockers

Presentation Practice Pods

Existing Space

  • Located on Level 1
  • 12 Presentation Practice Pods with LCD screens on level 1 of the Library are now bookable online:
  • Pods are for use by Macquarie University & SIBT students for study purpose only in groups of up to 10 people and in 2 hour blocks.
  • These pods do not replace classrooms. They are not to be booked for teaching or social activities

Macquarie University Sport Fields

With over seven hectares of specialist playing areas, Macquarie University Sport Fields are perfect for soccer, rugby, AFL, cricket, touch football, plus more.

The fields feature two canteen and BBQ areas as well as change room facilities.

Lighthouse Theatre

If you're looking for a space for theatre productions, rehearsals, workshops, seminars, comedy nights or presentation evenings, the Lighthouse Theatre is the perfect location!

Located opposite Macquarie University Sport & Aquatic Centre, the theatre includes a foyer complete with reception desk and food and beverage counter.

With a seating capacity for 150 people, the space features the following:

  • Male, female and disabled toilets
  • Backstage make up and change room
  • Lockers
  • Curtain
  • Control box with lighting and sound equipment
  • Fixed projector and screen

Poolside Studio

With easy access and views of the outdoor 50 metre swimming pool, this studio features a stage, sound system, floorboards and long mirrored wall. Fitness equipment can also be utilised or removed depending on your event.

The Poolside Studio can be utilised for pre-function canapés or presentation evenings with seating capacity for up to 150 people.

Courtyard Studio

Overlooking the Health Club Courtyard, this studio features a sound system, floorboards and mirrored wall. Great for corporate luncheons and seminars, this space has the seating capacity for up to 40 people.

Lifestyle Studio

Located on Level One, the Lifestyle Studio is a more intimate space in comparison to the other studios at the Centre.

Featuring a stage, carpeted floor and sound system, the studio is ideal for team building workshops and low-impact fitness programs. It also plays host to our child minding facilities from 9am - 12pm, Monday to Friday.

Recreational Hall

The Recreation Hall is located on the Ground Floor and has been utilised for Tai Chi and Wushu State Championships, Martial Arts Championships, state and national training camps, presentation evenings and team building events.

The facility features a dividing net and features markings for various sports. The space can easily fit 10 table tennis tables and be divided into the following:

  • Three badminton courts
  • One netball court
  • One volleyball court
For martial arts programs, two punching bags and jujitsu mats are available.

Sport Hall

The Sport Hall is located on Level One of the Centre and has been utilised for competitions, corporate team building, sport programs for children and sporting clinics.

The adaptable facility has an electronic scoreboard, dividing net and spectator viewing stand. The space features markings for various sports and can be divided into the following:

  • Four badminton courts
  • One futsal court
  • One basketball court
  • One netball court

Swimming Pools

At the Centre, we have two luxuriously heated pools, including a 25 metre indoor and 50 metre outdoor pools. For outdoor events, there is a shaded area for spectators and deck chairs.

Pool inflatables and water polo equipment are available upon request.

In the past, the swimming pools have been utilised for water safety skills, aqua zumba, school swimming carnivals, water polo and underwater hockey.

Kompan Courts

Just outside Macquarie University Sport & Aquatic Centre, there are two Kompan Courts. These are suitable for basketball or small sided soccer games, team building events and as a fitness testing space.

Health Club Courtyard

Perfect for team building programs or pre-event canapés, our Health Club Courtyard is situated in the heart of Macquarie University Sport & Aquatic Centre.

Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame showcases some of Macquarie University's finest sporting individuals and achievements. With exhibitions changing annually, it also serves as a versatile location for your pre-function event.

Gymnastics Hall

Organise a birthday party that your child will never forget! Our Gymnastics Hall features balance beams, trampolines, foam pit, monkey bars, swings, plus more. After the fully supervised program ends, the party continues with cake and party favours in the viewing area. The Gymnastics Hall is also used for school sport programs, parkour classes, cheerleading squads and acrobatic workshops.
